About
"Beselo" is a virus affecting cell phones operating Symbian OS S60 2nd edition. Its goal is to spread to other phones, using MMS and Bluetooth as transport
avenues. In both cases, the virus poses as a "harmless" (or thought to be by the victims) multimedia file.
Infection routines
Unlike "Comwarrior"(link), the virus not only extracts numbers from the contact list of the infected phone, but also generates some by itself - all the
generated ones belonging to the same mobile operator located in China. It then sends those numbers an MMS carrying an infected installation file. This
file poses as a multimedia file, any of the following:
- Beauty.jpg
- Sex.mp3
- Love.rm
To effectively become infected, the target has to "click" on the attachement, besides reading the malicious MMS.
The virus also resorts to Bluetooth as an alternative propagation method: it searches for bluetooth-enabled device in its vicinity, and tries to send
itself to those.
Visible Symptoms
- rapid battery power loss due to propagation attempts via Bluetooth.
- Abnormally high bill, due to propagation attempts via MMS messages.
