Multiple .FLA Parsing Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash CS3 Professional
2008.March.19

Summary:

Fortinet Global Security Research Team discovers multiple .FLA file parsing vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Professional CS3.

Impact:

Remote code execution.

Risk:
  • Medium

Affected Software:
  • Adobe Flash CS3 Professional 9.0

Additional Information:

Adobe Flash CS3 Professional parser does not handle malformed .FLA files accurately, potentially permitting regular code flow alteration (.FLA files are comparable to Flash source code, thus are normally not meant to reach end-users). Nonetheless, a Flash developer could be lured into opening a specially crafted .FLA file, allowing an attacker to take control of her/his system. These files cannot be loaded directly in a browser (like an .SWF file could), so they would typically need to be downloaded first, or executed through an attachment. As of writing, a patch has not been released by the vendor to address these issues.

Solutions:
  • Fortinet recommends taking precaution and only opening .FLA files from trusted sources.
  • Fortinet AntiVirus provides protection against this threat.
