November 2007, Cumulative Patch Virus Threat An infected email is being sent to inboxes claiming to be from Microsoft. The email notifies the recipient that the attached file is the latest version of the security update for MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express. The attached file resembling as a Microsoft Installer (MSI) associated executable with file size of 106,496 bytes is infected with a mass-mailer virus detected by Fortinet as W32/Swen.A. When executed, the virus will modify the registry and startup settings. Also, this virus contains code to propagate via email, IRC and Kazaa File Sharing. Users should be cautious in opening executable attachment in email even if it is from a known sender. Fortinet’s Antivirus solutions protect customers from being infected with this mass-mailer. Also, Fortinet’s FortiGate is capable of blocking executable attachment at the network perimeter before it gets to the end users.
