Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Windows Shell URI Handling

Fortinet Global Security Research Team Provides Protection Against A Vulnerability in Windows URI Handling.

Summary:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Windows shell when handling specially crafted URIs. An attacker can execute arbitrary code on the affected system by exploiting this vulnerability.

Execution of arbitrary code leading to system compromise.

Additional Information:

The vulnerability exists in the “Shell32.dll” Windows file included in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The vulnerability is currently being exploited on systems using Internet Explorer 7.

Solutions:
  • Fortinet Global Security Research Team has released a signature “MS.Windows.ShellExecute.URL.Handling.Code.Execution” (Attack ID: 12242) last 1st of Nov, 2007 which covers this specific vulnerability.
  • Users of Microsoft Windows XP and Server 2003 should apply the vendor supplied updates (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/bulletins/200711.mspx).
