eBay Phish Using AOL Open Redirect

Fortinet Global Security Research Team Discovers Phish Using AOLSearch Redirection

A phishing attempt is being spammed to inboxes claiming to be from eBay’s Security Center. The email further notifies the user that they have a security alert to resolve, and entices them to click the link in order to take action. The AOLSearch link contains the prefix http://aolsearch.aol.com/aol/redir?clickedItemURN=http://[removed:eBay-signin-URL].

Following the phishing link brings the user to a site which may expose their personal information once entered, putting them at risk of account and/or identity theft. The redirect may also be used for other popular phishing sites such as bank phishes.

The phishing attempt is using a well recognized name (AOL) in an effort to disguise the false eBay sign-in site. AOL is currently fixing this issue.

Users should inspect all links before following them, even if they appear to come from a valid domain such as AOL. Users should never enter personal information on sites they are directed to from third party suggestion such as email. Fortinet’s Antispam and Webfiltering solutions protect customers from being redirected to blacklisted URI.
