Multiple Vulnerabilities Affecting Microsoft Speech Control.
2007.June.12

Fortinet Global Security Research Team Discovers Multiple Vulnerabilities Affecting Microsoft Speech Control.

Summary:

Two remote buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the "Xvoice.dll" ActiveX component of Microsoft Speech. An attacker can execute arbitrary code on the affected system by exploiting either vulnerability.

Risk:

  • Critical

Affected Software:

  • Microsoft Speech 4.0a

Additional Information:

A remote attacker could construct a malicious web page, referencing the vulnerable functions and setting the vulnerable argument to a very long value. This could lead to a buffer overflow ( one on the stack, the other on the heap ), which could result in the execution of abitrary code and allow full control of the affected system.

This vulnerability is due to improper sanitization of remotely supplied data.

Solution:

  • Use the workaround provided by Microsoft in (MS07-033)
