FortiGuard Advisory (FGA-2006-29)
Stration Threat The Fortinet Response Team has discovered another variant of the mass-mailer Stration; unexpectedly, overpassing Grew.A and Netsky.P. Stration.DS first spotted in Thailand moves its way to as many as 91 nations and still hitting the threat chart.
The level for this threat is escalated to Level 4; the first Stration variant that makes to 100,000 mark. Fortinet advises its customers to update their FortiGate security appliances, FortiMail secure messaging appliances and FortiClient Host Security software to protect against the biggest mass-mailers for the week.
The strategy of the gang behind Stration, which Fortinet Response Team deciphered in the end of last month (more), is being confirmed upon each new outbreak: Infected machines serve as a seeding base for the next variant takeoff, hence the ramping up effect observable on figure below. Again, the ultimate goal pursued by the gang is still subject to speculations, but following the figure, bigger outbreaks are to be expected in the next days. Fortinet Threat Response Team keeps closely monitoring the situation.
