Buffer Overflow Vulnerability in WinAmp
2006.May.29

Fortinet Security Research Team has discovered a buffer overflow condition in Winamp (v5.21 and previous). This vulnerability affects v5.21 and prior.

When Winamp plays "midi" music, it loads in_midi.dll. This plugin contains the vulnerability. It is possible to construct a malformed midi (.mid) file and host it on a web site. An attacker would only require to successfully convince an unsuspecting user to visit the trojanized site hosting the midi file. Running the midi file causes Winamp to crash, and in a worse case scenario, run arbitrary code.

This vulnerability was first reported to the vendor on April 19th.
